Second day here in the STL! My butt is still pretty chaffed from our long ride two days ago, in case anyone was wondering. Our teaching workshop starts in the afternoon today so the team took this opportunity to explore the city. Anna, Travis, and Cole went to the iconic Gateway Arch Monument, a pillar to honor “pioneer spirit of the men and women who won the West, and those of a latter day to strive on other frontiers." Woohoo. On the other hand, being children at heart, Maceo, Sean, and I ventured to the City Museum, a museum whose exhibits consist largely of repurposed architectural and industrial objects. Basically a giant playground. Teehee. Sliding down 10 story slides and climbing through metallic tunnels suspended 50 feet in the air, we left behind our bikes and crawled back into the imaginary worlds we once ventured in many moons ago. We tried butter cake, heeding the advice of the students at the YES program yesterday!

I came away from the workshop yesterday with the students having taught me more than I taught them. I learned all about daily hubbub of an STL-er like going to Schnucks (a grocery chain in the Midwest!), getting frozen custard at Ted Drewes, chowing down on some tasty pizza at Imo’s, and taking a quick trip to their strangely extravagant gas station, QuikTrip (so many walls of drinks oh my).

Cole shines light on cosmology from a new angle. Haha.

We then took a QuikTrip down to the Julia Davis Library for our afternoon workshop! Because we only had an afternoon, the workshops were a little shorter today. We also had a smaller group of kids today which means more personalized learning!!! YayyyyY!! I had planned for the kids to do the lemon experiment but after hearing about slime from the other spokespeople they got super pumped for oobleck so I ran out to get some cornstarch for fun times. As fun as oobleck is to make and play with and to see the kids get so excited about its ~magical properties~, it is SO hard to clean. It also semi-stains my hands so that my hands are green and purple for a couple days after the workshops. After the workshop, the team headed to Southern’s, a soul food place with a great Yelp review for an early dinner. Got myself a biscuit and coleslaw. Cue Murphy’s Law Joke. Worn out from early morning fun and once again squished into the backseat of our 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, Rhonda (good name? let me know), the team (minus Sean- he went to visit a friend) headed back to the church to rest our tired bodies and souls for another long ride tomorrow.

Come visit St. Louis!
